Why does my hair feel rough after washing? Water or other causes?
Five common causes and their clues
| Possible cause | Clues that point to it | A cheap way to test |
|---|---|---|
| Mineral buildup from hard water | White chalky marks on taps and shower heads, scale in the kettle, shampoo that lathers poorly, hair that feels better when you wash somewhere with softer water | Test your water hardness. Compare with a rinse using distilled water (see below) |
| Product buildup | Coated or waxy feel, hair that goes flat quickly, layers of oils, serums or styling products | Pause leave-in products for two weeks and see if it changes |
| Heat, bleach or chemical damage | Ends rougher than roots, history of straightening, keratin treatments, bleaching or colour | Compare new growth near the scalp with the ends |
| Washing habits | Very frequent washing, very hot water, no conditioner, vigorous towel drying | Change one habit at a time for two weeks |
| Something medical | Hair is thinning or shedding, not just rough | See hair fall or breakage and talk to a doctor |
An informal two-week rinse comparison
This is not a clinical trial, and you will know which rinse you used, so it can bias what you notice. It is still a cheap clue.
- Keep your shampoo, conditioner and styling exactly the same for two weeks.
- For the first week, rinse as usual.
- For the second week, finish each wash with a final rinse of distilled water from a jug. Do not use any new product.
- Take photos in the same light on day 1, 7 and 14. Note how the hair feels when dry.
If the distilled-water week feels clearly smoother, mineral content in your tap water is a reasonable suspect. If nothing changes, look at the other causes. Distilled water is for rinsing hair only, not for drinking.
What not to conclude
- Rough hair does not prove hard water. Several causes feel the same.
- White marks on taps show your water has minerals. They do not prove those minerals are damaging your hair.
- Hair that is falling out at the root is a different problem from roughness. See hair fall causes and blood tests.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my hair feel different after moving cities?
Water, climate and routine can all change when you move, so it is hard to isolate one cause. Test your new tap water's hardness and compare it with your old city if you can.
Why doesn't my conditioner seem to work?
Product buildup, damage or heavy mineral content can all make conditioner seem to do less. Try the tests above one at a time.
Does poor lather mean my water is hard?
It is a common clue, since calcium and magnesium react with soap. But it can also happen with product residue or with some shampoo formulas, so treat it as a hint only.
Is Bloom Hard Water Fix a treatment for this?
No. Hard Water Fix is made for hair that feels rough or coated from mineral buildup. It is not a medical treatment, so if this is your main concern, follow the steps above and see a doctor if it persists.
