How to wash your hair in hard water: a step-by-step routine

Short answer (2026-10-23): To wash hair in hard water: wet it thoroughly, use enough shampoo on the scalp, rinse for longer than you think, condition the lengths only, detangle gently, and pat dry. Optional extras include a distilled-water final rinse and an occasional chelating shampoo. These steps are general hair-care practice; no study tested this routine in hard water, so treat it as a sensible starting point.

The routine

  1. Wet thoroughly. Soak the hair and scalp fully before shampoo, so it spreads easily.
  2. Shampoo the scalp. Use a coin to palm amount and massage the scalp. Let the suds run through the lengths without scrubbing.
  3. Rinse longer. Mineral-rich water can leave residue, and the USGS notes soaps need more water to rinse in hard water. Rinse until the hair no longer feels slippery.
  4. Condition the lengths and ends. Keep it off the roots. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb while it is in.
  5. Rinse out the conditioner fully.
  6. Pat dry. Press with a soft towel or cotton T-shirt; do not rub.

Test your water first
