My hair changed after I moved cities: is it the water?

Short answer (2026-10-23): If your hair changed after moving cities, water is one possible reason among several, along with climate, stress, diet and routine. Water hardness varies between cities and even between neighbourhoods, so test your new tap instead of guessing. If your new water is hard and your hair turned rough or coated, Bloom Hard Water Fix is made for that. If you also see heavy shedding, speak to a doctor.

Why a move can change your hair

  • Water. Hardness, dissolved solids and chemicals vary by city, supply source and area. A 2024 study of two areas of Lahore found large differences between them, with total dissolved solids averaging 192.56 mg/L in one and 612.84 mg/L in the other.
  • Climate. Humidity and temperature change how hair behaves.
  • Stress and routine. A move can disrupt sleep, diet and styling habits. Stress is one of the causes of temporary shedding listed by the NHS.
  • New products. A different shampoo or conditioner can change how hair feels.

What to do

  1. Test your new tap water with a hardness kit. If you can, compare with your old city's reading.
  2. Keep your products the same for two weeks while you watch for changes.
  3. Use the rough hair checklist and the distilled-water rinse comparison.
  4. If hair is falling out from the root, see hair fall causes and blood tests.

We do not have a reliable hardness table for Pakistani cities. See what published studies show.
