Short answer (2026-10-23): Hard water is water with a high concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium. The US Geological Survey classes it by milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate: soft 0 to 60, moderately hard 61 to 120, hard 121 to 180, very hard over 180. Hard water is not a drinking-water safety problem in itself. It makes soap harder to lather, leaves white scale on taps and kettles, and is a possible factor in rough, dull hair, though the hair evidence is mixed.

Where the hardness comes from

Rain and groundwater dissolve calcium and magnesium from rocks such as limestone as they move through the ground. The more of these minerals, the harder the water.

Is it a health risk?

Hardness is not a safety measure. It says nothing about bacteria, arsenic or other contaminants. A hardness test does not tell you if water is safe to drink.
