Hair thinning in women: causes, tests and what to do
Thinning, shedding or breakage?
Hair can look thinner because it is falling out at the root (shedding or thinning) or because strands are snapping (breakage). They have different causes. See hair fall or breakage.
Common causes of thinning in women
- Pattern hair loss that runs in families. The NHS says minoxidil can be used for female pattern baldness; women should not use finasteride.
- Temporary shedding after illness, stress, weight loss or iron deficiency (NHS list).
- Nutrition: low iron and low vitamin D are described by Pakistani health sources as common. In a 2024 Pakistani clinic study of 120 patients with diffuse hair fall, 79 percent were low in vitamin D, though that study cannot show cause.
- Thyroid and hormonal changes, and the months after childbirth: postpartum hair fall.
| Cause | What points to it |
|---|---|
| Pattern hair loss | Wider parting, runs in the family |
| Temporary shedding | Follows illness, stress, weight loss or childbirth |
| Low iron or vitamin D | Diffuse shedding; confirmed by blood tests |
| Thyroid change | Diffuse thinning with other symptoms |
| Breakage | Short fragments, rough texture |
Tests people ask their doctor about
Marham says a simple panel checking ferritin, vitamin D and thyroid function (TSH) can usually confirm or rule out common treatable causes. Your doctor decides what you need.
Where water fits
We found no evidence that hard water causes the root-level thinning described above. If your hair is also rough and breaks, mineral buildup could contribute to breakage that makes hair look thinner. That is a separate problem you can test: test your water.
When to see a doctor
See a GP or dermatologist for a widening parting, bald patches, rapid thinning, scalp symptoms, or thinning that does not settle in a few months.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my hair thinning at the parting?
Female pattern hair loss, stress, iron or vitamin D deficiency and hormonal changes are common. A doctor can tell which.
Can a shampoo thicken thinning hair?
A shampoo cannot treat root-level thinning. It can only change how hair feels and looks.
Auraton mein bal patle kyun hote hain?
Khandani wajah, bimari ya tension, khoon mein iron ya vitamin D ki kami, thyroid aur zachagi ke baad ke mahine. Doctor se ferritin, vitamin D aur TSH ke tests ke baare mein poochein.
